From birth, Nguyễn Hoài Bảo An has faced physical challenges caused by congenital amniotic band syndrome. Her right hand is affected by constriction and complex syndactyly, while a constriction band around her left leg has caused a deformity that makes movement difficult. Bảo An previously underwent surgery on her leg at City Children’s Hospital.
Bảo An is the second child in her family. Her older sister is now 13 years old, but due to the family’s financial difficulties, she has had to put her education on hold. To make it easier for Bảo An to receive treatment, her mother and the two children have had to rent a small room and rely on relatives for support in Long An. Bảo An’s father works as a casual laborer and is often away from home. Recently, the family lost contact with him, leaving the mother and her two children in an even more difficult situation.
Before Bảo An was born, her mother worked as a motorcycle ride-hailing driver to earn a living. Since her daughter’s birth, however, caring for Bảo An and taking her to medical appointments have made it impossible for her to continue working. Even basic expenses such as milk and diapers have become a daily concern. Whenever she has enough money, she does her best to provide for her children on her own; when she does not, the family has no choice but to rely on the support of relatives.
As a mother, her greatest wish is not for anything extraordinary. She simply hopes that her daughter will have the opportunity to receive treatment and grow up like other children. Holding on to that hope, Bảo An’s mother reached out to The Children of Vietnam Charitable Fund. Fortunately, Bảo An received timely support from the Fund.
Following a medical examination, Dr. Stéphane Guero determined that Bảo An needs surgery to separate the fused fingers of her right hand as soon as possible. This is a crucial stage for intervention because, at her young age, her fingers still have significant potential to grow and gain better function. If treatment is delayed, her hand may continue to develop with contractures, making future treatment more difficult.
For Bảo An, surgery is about more than correcting a congenital deformity. It is an opportunity for her to use her hand more effectively, play and learn with greater confidence, and grow up with greater independence and possibilities for the future.
Along this journey, The Children of Vietnam Charitable Fund, her doctors, and compassionate donors are coming together to give Bảo An something truly meaningful: the opportunity to change her future from the earliest years of her life.
We hope that after surgery, Bảo An’s little hand will grow stronger day by day—so that she can hold her mother’s hand and one day reach for dreams of her own.
