Đoàn Viên, just over 2 years old, is facing a serious retinal detachment (ROP). Her left eye is completely blind, and her right eye has high intraocular pressure and needs urgent surgery to preserve her vision. At the end of August 2024, when the Children of Vietnam Charitable Fund met Đoàn Viên, she cried a lot as the doctor prepared for her examination under anesthesia. Her mother reassured her, explaining that her vision impairment caused her fear. However, a touching moment came when Đoàn Viên stopped crying, captivated by the scent of a Mid-Autumn mooncake. With her weak vision, she could only sense the gift by smelling and touching it – an innocent yet emotional moment. On August 21, 2024, after the examination, doctors found that her right eye's retina had detached again, requiring a complex surgery in mid-September. The surgery will involve multiple treatments, including scleral buckling and silicone oil injection, with hopes of saving her vision. This is the only chance for her to see the light again, as her left eye is beyond repair.

 

Her family lives in a charity house built for her grandmother in 2003. Her father works as a fisherman with unstable income, while her mother stays home to care for two small children. The family is currently in debt from covering previous medical treatments and cannot afford the upcoming surgery. This surgery will allow Đoàn Viên to see her parents, brother, and the beautiful world around her.
